National Science Foundation will build ship for polar research

On May 29, 2009 the National Science Foundation announced its first major award funded via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  NSF funded the construction of the Alaska Region Research Vessel (ARRV).  This ship is designed specifically for research in icy water and will be used for a wide variety of studies related to global warming in the polar region.  The project is expected to create more than 4,000 jobs.
